Stereoscopic albumen print photograph, early 1860s. Each image approximately 78 x 80 mm. Verso with contemporary inscription in ink: The Den on the way to the Lake. Tasmania. No photographer's details, but the image is possibly attributable to Samuel Clifford (1827-1890).
The location is The Den, former name of Lefroy, in the vicinity of George Town, northern Tasmania. This is the site where gold is said to have first been discovered in Tasmania in 1840, and which was later known as the Lefroy goldfields in the 1880s.
