‘William Scarborough was a Wesleyan Methodict minister and missionary in China, born on 21 January 1841 at Barrow, Barton-upon-Humber. He was appointed, along with David Hill, to Hankow (Hankou), China in 1864. He returned to England in 1885 because of his health and was appointed Chairman of the Whitby and Darlington District in 1891. His mastery of Chinese language and literature found expression in his Collection of Chinese Proverbs (1875; revised and enlarged by C.W. Allan, Shanghai, 1926).
