CHUCK, Thomas Foster
A mother and her infant outside Alma Terrace, Moray Street, South Melbourne, circa 1875.
Albumen print photograph, carte de visite format, 64 x 102 mm (mount), verso with imprint of ‘The London Portrait Gallery. T. F. Chuck, Photographer … Royal Arcade, near the Fountain, Melbourne’, and contemporary inscriptions in pencil ‘Alma Terrace, Moray St. S. Melb, where Annie was born, Sep. 1st 1874, and ‘R.A. Lloyd, Russell Street’; the print has some creasing but very good detail, enabling us to read the words ‘1865 / Alma Terrace’ on the architrave.
Commissioned photographs of this type were popular in Melbourne and Sydney during the 1870s and 1880s, and were often placed in the family carte de visite album. However, surviving examples generally do not have an address indicated on the back! This South Melbourne weatherboard residence is sadly no longer standing.
