NEWMAN, John Hubert (1830-1916)
A pair of photographic portraits of two young women in mourning dress, taken during the same studio sitting. Sydney, circa 1874
Two albumen print photographs, in identical cabinet card format (mounts 164 x 108 mm), versos with imprint of ‘J. Hubert Newman, Photographer and Crayon Painter, 12 South Head Road, Hyde Park, Sydney. Photographer by Appointment to His Excellency the Governor’; both albumen prints and mounts are in fine condition.
These magnificent portraits of two unidentified young women – possibly sisters, as they have matching mourning dresses and velvet hats trimmed with ostrich plumes – were taken by the justly celebrated Sydney photographer J. Hubert Newman.
Davies & Stanbury (Mechanical Eye) list Newman at his 12 South Head Road address for a five-year period only (1869-1874). The cabinet card format and the young ladies’ attire and coiffure suggest that the portraits were probably taken no earlier than 1874.
