Albumen print photograph, carte de visite format, 104 x 65 mm (mount); verso with gilt back mark ‘From the Photographic Studio of J. Bishop Osborne, 76 Murray St. Hobart Town’; both the print and mount are in very good condition.

The photographer Bishop Osborne was active at 76 Murray Street in the period 1879-1883 (Davies & Stanbury, The Mechanical Eye in Australia).

At the time this studio portrait was taken – around 1880 – there were approximately 600 part-time soldiers in the Tasmanian volunteer regiments, including 200 artillery, 350 infantry and about fifty mounted infantry.
