After Robert Morrison, William Milne (1785-1822) was only the second Protestant missionary sent to China by the London Missionary Society. Milne worked in Canton, where he acquired his knowledge of the Chinese language. He then collaborated with Morrison to produce the second complete Chinese version of the Bible, and was chief editor of the missionary magazine Chinese Monthly Magazine (Cha sisu meiyue tongjizhuan). Most of Milne’s missionary career was spent in Malacca, where he was principal of the Anglo-Chinese College and editor of the English-language missionary magazine Indo-Chinese Gleaner.
