A scarce account of 1883-1884 voyage of the “Charles Stewart” from New York to Hobart, written by the daughter of the Captain. It contains a description go Hobart and its inhabitants : ‘The people of Hobart are plain looking, few handsome ones, but their plainness is only skin deep, for they were handsome in acts of friendship’. Following their stay in Hobart, the sailed for Brisbane, where they ‘meet a number of Aborigines, black and wicked looking’, before sailing again across the Pacific to Valparaiso.
