Quarto (250 x 210 mm), contemporary full black morocco, upper board with gilt rule and gilt-stamped lettering ‘Post Cards / Uganda / British East Africa’, spine with gilt bands, containing 105 original postcards from the period 1910-25, evidently collected in situ by the album’s compiler and preserved by them in this handsome custom-bound album as a souvenir of ther time in Africa; the cards are slit-mounted (i.e. they are fully removable) two per page on 27 leaves; the majority are b/w or sepia tone lithographic postcards, but the collection also includes a number of chromolithographic and real photo cards; all are by local African publishers, and the subjects comprise a diverse range of ethnographic types and scenes (45) and topographical views (60), which include urban streetscapes and buildings (Entebbe, Nairobi, Mombasa, Kijabe, Kisumu, Port Sudan etc.) as well as scenery (Lake Victoria, the Nile, vegetation, wildlife etc.); the cards were not mailed, none have writing on the back, and all have survived in virtually mint condition. A remarkable archive documenting colonial East Africa in the early twentieth century.
