BECKER, W. (lithographer)
Album of the finest birds of all countries
Philadephia : Weik & Wieck, c. 1850. Oblong folio, pictorial silk (a few stains), rebacked, 25 hand coloured lithograph plates of birds from around the world, a very good copy.
The German-American firm of Weik and Wieck, described on the upper board as ‘Publishers and Importers’, are recorded as being in partnership from at least 1853. They specialised in lithography and commissioned and imported high quality prints from their native Germany. This rare and exquisite album contains 25 high quality hand coloured lithographs each captioned in English and German. Arranged by continent, it includes 14 plates illustrating birds from the Americas, 5 plates of European birds, 1 from Asia and 5 plates of Australian birds, including the bird of paradise, rosellas, parrots, the titmouse and wren.
This album is held in a handful of American collections and a single Australian library (NLA). It rarely appears in the market, according to Rare Book Hub the most recent auction result is from 1986 (Sotheby’s), and prior to that in 1942 (Parke Bernet – ‘A very rare work’) and 1922 (Anderson Galleries).
