HUNTER, Percy; WESTON, Harry (artist)
Alpine sport in New South Wales, Australia : with ski, skate, toboggan and dog sleighs on snow-clad Kosciusko.
Cover: “Souvenir of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, 1915.” Sydney : W. A. Gullick, printer [for The Immigration and Tourist Bureau, Challis House], 1915. Octavo (183 x 128 mm), original pictorial wrappers with a design by Harry Weston (very good, with a few toning spots), stapled (localised rust marks); pp 46, with monochrome photographic illustrations throughout printed in blue; text in sepia on white; internally pristine, a fine example.
Specially printed for the American market and made available for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco during 1915, this edition of the New South Wales Immigration & Tourist Bureau’s superbly produced booklet promoting alpine tourism is not represented in Australian collections. There were two earlier printings of this publication, in 1910 and 1912, both of which are rare, with copies held only in the NLA and SLNSW; however, this 1915 edition, although retaining Harry Weston’s wonderful cover design from the previous issues, is an unrecorded variant with the word “Australia” included at the end of the main title, the phrase “dog sleighs” in the subtitle, and “Souvenir of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, 1915” on the front wrapper.
