Yearbook of the Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography for 2001, honouring the centenary of the Swedish Antarctic Expedition of 1901-1903 led by Otto Nordenskjöld and Carl Anton Larsen.
‘In 2001, it is 100 years since Otto Nordenskjöld set out on his famous expedition to Antarctica. The expedition had far-reaching consequences for Swedish research, not only in Antarctica but also in South America. This year’s Ymer is dedicated to the centenary of the expedition, giving an account of what it achieved and some of its consequences. The dramatic course of the expedition and the rescue are described from an Argentine perspective – for us, an unfamiliar point of view, based on the diary of the Argentine participant José Sobral. To illustrate how work conditions in the polar regions have evolved since that time, glimpses of contemporary Swedish geographical research in the region are presented, and future research is also discussed.’ – The Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography (our translation).
