BARKER COLLEGE (SYDNEY)
[AUSTRALIAN CINEMA] Barker College Pictures proudly present their premiere Talkie Unit entertainment Sports Day, Saturday, October 3rd, at 8 p.m. Featuring Paul Whiteman and his band in the “King of Jazz”, also Talkie Shorts. Admission Free.
Cover: Australia’s only School with a Talkie Plant. Reproduction by means of Barkophone Super Sound System. Octavo (230 x 150 mm) bifolium, pp; inner pages contain Programme of “talkies” for the evening, culminating with the screening of “King of Jazz”, a preview of the Jack Oakie film “The Social Lion” to be screened on 24 October, details about the Barker College picture theatre (seating capacity of 200 and parking for 1000 cars!), and information about the school’s Talkie Plant, ‘designed and installed by the Executive Staff, all of whom have been educated at this College’; rear with twin illustrated advertisements for “The Social Lion” and “Mr. Lemon of Orange”, to be screened on 7 November; in very good condition.
This rare ephemeral item appears completely unrecorded. Presumably Barker College’s “Talkie Unit” was designed and built exclusively for the use of its students, staff and alumni, so was very much a private picture theatre, albeit on a large scale.
A fascinating piece of early Sydney cinema history.
