GILL, Samuel Thomas (1818 - 1880); TINGLE, J.
Ballaarat, looking N. W. from Mount Bunningyong, 1857
Steel engraving, vignette approximately 100 x 160 mm, on sheet 205 x 275 mm, uncoloured as issued, a couple of small spots of foxing and faint tide mark to margin not affecting the image. Published in the volume Victoria Illustrated, Melbourne and Sydney : Sands & Kenny; and Geelong : Thomas Brown, 1857 (Ferguson 9924; Wantrup 260a).
After the success of Frederick Terry’s ‘Landscape Scenery’ in 1855 which depicted colonial Sydney and its environs, publisher John Sands commissioned S. T. Gill to illustrate a series of Victorian views along the same lines. The original paintings were sent to England to be engraved on to steel, and subsequently returned for publication as ‘Victoria Illustrated’ in 1857. The plates depict colonial Melbourne, Geelong and the Goldfields at the height of the boom. A second series of views was to follow in 1862.
