Barbara Hepworth (1903-1975). Autograph letter, signed, headed ‘Chy-an-Kerris, Carbis Bay, May 31’ [no year, but probably 1948-1950, as from December 1950 Hepworth lived permanently at Trewyn Studio, St. Ives]; 2 pp., octavo, written in blue fountain pen; signed at the foot by the artist with her full signature. Hepworth writes from her residence outside St. Ives to ‘Dear Roger’ – evidently a family acquaintance from childhood in Yorkshire – in answer to his inquiries on behalf of a friend who is interested in renting a cottage in the St. Ives area: ‘I am sorry to say that there is very little chance of finding a cottage in this district – the housing situation is difficult here & as it is a very favoured resort at the moment prices are simply colossal … … My Mother & Father gave me news of you. They have just returned to Leeds. My best wishes, Yours sincerely, Barbara Hepworth.’; fine condition.
