[BOARD GAME] Sheep-dog trial : an educational game.

  • Sold

[Australia] : E. Charles, [1951]. Thin board, 300 x 460 mm, folding, front printed in red, green and black with pictorial design featuring an Australian kelpie and merino sheep, fold-out illustrated game board also printed in red, green and black, with accompanying printed text comprising the rules of the game and a brief history of the Australian kelpie breed, sheep-dog trials, and also of the merino wool industry in Australia, giving statistics for the years 1950-51; ‘E. Charles, Copyright’ printed at bottom left; a tiny amount of pale foxing to the outer boards, but a fine example.

Rare. We can locate no examples in institutional collections of this self-published, archetypally Australian game that lovingly pays homage to the kelpie; in fact, we can find no printed or online reference to it. Although the game board provides no clue as to the identity of the creator, E. Charles, it seems safe to assume that he or she was connected with Australian sheep trials in some capacity, either as an official or dog-owning competitor.
