Sydney : Angus & Robertson, 1992. Octavo, illustrated wrappers (paperback), pp. 204, illustrated, inscription to title page. The 1992 paperback edition of McGrath’s 1979 hardcover monograph, rushed into print upon the artist’s death, with revisions by McGrath which were the subject of litigation by Wendy and Arkie Whiteley. The Whiteleys claimed breach of copyright for unauthorised use of Brett’s images, and were successful in obtaining a court ruling that the edition be recalled and pulped. An inscription in another copy we have sold tells another side of the story: ‘Publisher’s Proof Copy Aug 1 1992. This book is not for sale and was subject to a court order for pulping. It has been kept by the publisher for the sake of history. The aim of its suppression was to remove Janice Spencer as one of the Whiteley women. Regrettably this was successful. ***** Publisher A&R 1989 – 1993’. This copy is not inscribed as such.  Rare.
