Calling card of the Town Clerk of Melbourne, Mr. John Clayton. Presented to Commandeur de Chauleac of the French warship Scorff, 1892.
Steel engraved calling card, 37 x 76 mm, printed recto only ‘The Town Clerk of Melbourne / Mr. John Clayton’; presented to Commandeur Joseph de Chauleac (Chauliac), captain of the French warship Scorff, which visited Melbourne in November 1892; accompanied by two other calling cards relating to de Chauleac’s visit to Auckland, New Zealand around the same time, bearing the name and address of the Town Clerk of Auckland, P. A. Philips; the latter two items are handwritten (one by de Chauleac, one by Philips) – Chauleac used these as temporary calling cards during his Auckland shore visits; all three items are in very good condition.
John Clayton served as Melbourne’s Town Clerk from 1891 until 1915.
