SHARP, Martin (1942-2013)
Cartoons : a selection from Oz, The Australian, The Sydney Morning Herald, Honi Soit, Tharunka, etc.
[Sydney : Scripts, 1966]. Small quarto, Martin Sharp-designed silver and black card wrappers (extensive silverfish trails), staple bound, pp, illustrated; previous owner’s name inside front cover, pale foxing to inside covers and first and last leaves, else internally very good.
A scarce anthology of Sharp’s brilliant, sardonic cartoons from the first half of the 1960s, perhaps the most memorable being those first printed in the Sydney version of Oz magazine, of which Sharp was artistic editor from 1963 until 1969. This collection represents an important slice of Australian 1960s counterculture, although it pre-dates Sharp’s most famous psychedelic art work, for which he is best known. Apart from their artistic quality, the cartoons are driven by a hatred of hypocrisy and a desire to expose the truth – two essential ingredients for any great piece of satire.
