[WAGGA WAGGA] Clive Darril, Australian giant
Weight 17 stone. Height 7ft 8 ins. Age 35 years. [s.l. : s.n., c.1907]. Photolithographic postcard, 137 x 87 mm; not postally used; minor corner and edge wear; verso shows signs of having been removed from an album.
This postcard was most likely published in England in 1907, when Clive Darril, a wealthy farmer from Wagga Wagga, visited Europe. There he became infatuated with Miss Mariedl, the ‘Tyrolean Giantess’. He followed her across the continent from Vienna to Berlin, and on to Paris and London. Contemporary newspaper accounts suggest that in London, after watching all of her shows at the Hippodrome, Darril was persistent enough to chase Miss Mariedl’s car to Portsmouth. Catching up with her in Guildford, he was given permission by her manager to lunch with her. One report alleged that he also proposed marriage. Darril became something of a celebrity himself in England, telling the press that he wished to found a ‘race of giants’.
