Circa 1880. Albumen print photograph (pale, some foxing), carte de visite format (93 x 63 mm), no photographer's studio imprint, captioned in negative: General Tom Thumb and Wife.

'General Tom Thumb' – the stage name of Charles Sherwood Stratton (1838-1883) – was perhaps the most famous of all circus and sideshow performers of the nineteenth century. He was an American dwarf who travelled the world with the promoter P.T. Barnum. In this photograph he is shown with his wife, Lavinia Warren.
