Hobart Town : W.D. Wood, 1855. Æ penny, diameter 34 mm, weight 14.27 grams. Obverse: At centre, W.D. WOOD / WINE / & / SPIRIT / MERCHANT around, MONTPELLIER RETREAT . HOBART TOWN . Reverse: Corner view of hotel; above, HOBART TOWN; in exergue, 1855; in small letters around hotel eaves, MONTPELLIER RETREAT W.D.WOOD WINE MERCHANT. (Wood can be seen through the front door serving behind the bar on which sits a wine or beer jug); a very good example, with small toning spot to reverse.
The Hobart Town wine and spirit merchant W. D. Wood issued two types of penny tokens and one halfpenny denomination token. This example is the later and lighter of the two penny types, the other of which is dated 1854.
