Taken by an amateur photographer with a personal camera, this picture captures the expectant and happy atmosphere of men, women and children awaiting the arrival of the ferry at Queenscliff on a summer’s day in 1921. Everyone is dressed in their Sunday best for the outing across to Sorrento.

A truly wonderful vernacular photograph.
