Four volumes, octavo, original half leather over papered boards with colour lithograph design by Kurt Walser, spines (a little scuffed) with contrasting morocco title labels lettered in gilt, all edges stained red, pp ix, 215; 278; 294; 343; each title page with a different etched vignette illustration in sanguine by Walser, and a further 12 full-page etchings (also in sanguine) by the same artist across the 4 volumes; contents clean and fresh throughout, with all tissue guards facing the illustrated pages intact; a superb set.

A beautifully produced German edition of Les Amours du chevalier de Faublas by the French writer Jean-Baptiste Louvet de Couvray. First published in three parts between 1787 and 1790, the novel recounts the amorous adventures of a young provincial aristocrat in Paris, and was an inspiration for Richard Strauss’s opera Der Rosenkavalier.
