Gelatin silver print photograph, 100 x 70 mm (arched top format), printed on postcard stock, 137 x 86 mm; recto with manuscript caption ‘Eleanor Marie Fleming Lewis / Feb. 1909’; verso with the wet stamp of the photographer ‘A. Jackson / Scone’, and manuscript message with birthday greetings signed ‘Bess & Marie’ (the sitter and her mother); the card is addressed to ‘Mrs Louis Leake, “Euroka”, Walgett, NSW’, who was the sitter’s aunt; fine condition.

The owner of the property “Kelvinside” in Aberdeen, near Scone in the Upper Hunter, was wealthy grazier John King Fleming (1837-1916). The sitter in this charming photograph, taken in the Scone studio of A. C. Jackson, is Fleming’s granddaughter, Eleanor Marie (known to her family as Marie). The photograph was sent by little Marie’s mother, Jane Elizabeth “Bess” Fleming (Mrs. H. C. Lewis, of Eurool, Collarenebri) to her sister, Eleanor Maria Fleming (Mrs. Louis Leake, of Walgett).
