Politician and religious authority Ditlev Gothard Monrad lived in New Zealand between 1864 and 1869, where he settled in Palmerston North and played an important role in promoting Scandinavian emigration to the colony. Gamle Ny-Zeeland is a fictional account of early relations between Europeans and Maori seen through the eyes of an old colonist.

The only copies of either the Danish or the German editions in Australian collections are held in the State Library of New South Wales; copies of both editions are held in only two New Zealand collections (Alexander Turnbull Library; University of Otago Library).
