Octavo, original quarter morocco over blind blocked pebbled cloth boards (stained, upper board a little bowed), spine with raised bands, gilt lettering and ornament (rubbed), all edges gilt, silk lining papers, half title, title page with woodcut vignette, 328 pp, woodcut illustrations in the text, and 12 tinted lithographed plates with tissue guards; prominent water stain to top third of all leaves (not affecting legibility); a poor copy of a very scarce book.

Ferguson 7977; Sabin 38450. Palau 129302. Not in Forbes (although one chapter is devoted to Hawaii).

Fictional voyage memoir which describes most of the world’s gold and silver mining regions of the early 1850s, including the New South Wales goldfields. The descriptions are based on contemporary travel accounts. The tinted lithographed plates are particularly attractive, and include one of Australian gold seekers, and another of Sandwich Islanders (Hawaiians).
