ROWLING, J. K. (1965 - )

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (first edition, first state)

  • Sold

London : Bloomsbury, 1999. First edition, first state. Octavo, laminated pictorial boards (very lightly bumped at corners and head and foot of spine), lacking the dustjacket, previous owner’s name in black ink to front free-endpaper; pp. 317 [3 blanks]; a very good to fine copy.

First edition, first state, identifiable by the copyright line ‘Joanne Rowling’ rather than ‘J. K. Rowling’, and the line-break on page 7. The second state corrected these errors, with the third state adding advertisements at the rear. Errington notes that, according to the publisher’s archives, the total print run over the three states was 5,150 copies, of which approximately 2500 are first state. The demand for copies of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was so great, the initial print run of the first edition of 5,150 copies had mostly pre-sold prior to the day of publication, leading the publisher to distribute reprints in advance of publication. The first print run of 5,150 copies in May 1999 was followed by a reprint of 101,800 copies in June 1999.
