EVANS, George [1780 - 1852], (after)
Hobart Town plate, circa 1822.
[Staffordshire, U.K.] : circa 1822. Slip case earthenware ceramic with transfer print decoration in blue, 23 cm diameter, depicting a view of Hobart Town, Tasmania, titled ‘Hobart Town’ verso within decorative cartouche; hairline cracks expertly restored.
The earliest printed image of Australia on a ceramic.
The Staffordshire Hobart Town plate is one from a series of tableware which included views of Washington, Baltimore, Detroit and other cities. The view is based on the frontispiece to Evans’ 1822 publication A geographical, historical, and topographical description of Van Diemen’s Land, which in turn was based on the slightly earlier (1820) separately issued view of the township South west view of Hobart Town, Van Diemans Land. The image has been adapted for the circular format of the plate and framed with a decorative floral border.
Another example is held in the National Gallery of Australia and is dated ‘circa 1822’.
