$800.00 AUD

Leipzig zur Messe : Haude und Spener von Berlin, [1786]. Duodecimo (105 x 71 mm), contemporary marbled card covers, all edges gilt, engraved title page, pp [38] (with 12 leaves of engraved plates depicting Indian customs and scenes), 64, [10], folding colour engraved map of India (240 x 230 mm), 272, [2] leaves of plates (portraits of Robert Clive and Warren Hastings), [4] leaves of hand coloured plates of Indian types; without the additional title page Allgemeines historisches Taschenbuch oder Abriss der merkwürdigsten neuen Welt-Begebenheiten enthaltend für 1786 die Geschichte der wichtigsten Staats und Handelsveraenderungen von Ostindien; otherwise a near fine and fully contemporary example.

This scarce stand-alone publication, devoted to the history and culture of India and including an account of the East India Company and recent developments in trade between Europe and the sub-continent, was part of a series edited by Matthias Sprengel, professor of history at Halle, which looked at different regions of the world.

The superb map is a revision of that of Major James Rennell (1782), drawn and engraved by Daniel Friedrich Sotzmann (1785). The majority of the plates are by Daniel Chodowiecki, the notable exceptions being the portraits of Clive and Hastings by Daniel Berger.
