[Cover title : Jubilee history of Prahran]. Melbourne : Periodicals Pub. Co., 1906. Quarto, publisher’s deluxe binding of gilt-lettered morocco over gilt-lettered purple cloth (expertly rebacked with new spine), pp. [iv]; 5 – 205, extensively illustrated with photographs, occasional spots of foxing, a very good copy.

A detailed and very well illustrated history of the most afflluent suburbs of Melbourne, filled with numerous images of local streets, municipal buildings, local businesses, shops and architectural landmarks, notable private residences, local residents, civic figures, schools (including Wesley College) etc., and much else of local interest.

The Prahran Telegraph of Saturday 23 Sep 1905, documents that ‘Authority was given to the Periodicals Publishing Coy. to publish a Jubilee History of Prahran under the patronage of the mayor and councillors of the city and free of expense to the council’ (p. 3). While the Prahran Chronicle the same day announced that ‘copies are to be very liberally and widely distributed’ (p. 3), this work is exceedingly rare, five copies are recorded on Trove.

It’s rarity in the trade can be attested to by the catalogue description of a copy offered in Catalogue 117 of Kenneth Hince Old and Fine Books, September 2008 ‘Rare: only the second copy we have handled in thirty years’.
