EYMERY, Désirée

Le tour du monde pittoresque

$330.00 AUD

Paris : Désirée Eymery, n.d. [c.1838]. Oblong octavo, contemporary plain card covers with early calligraphic manuscript title and ownership signature to front (ink marks and some staining), engraved title page, pp 78 (but appears to lack a small number of pages from [79]), [9] engraved plates each with four illustrations of peoples in traditional costume of Africa, the Americas and Oceania; a number of the illustrations partially coloured by an early child owner; scattered foxing.

A rare French children’s book introducing the young reader to the geography, ethnology and customs of exotic regions. The illustrations in the Oceania section include indigenous peoples of New Holland (Aborigines making a bark canoe), New Zealand (with an erroneous depiction of a Māori holding a bow), New Caledonia, Guam, Solomon Islands, Tahiti and Hawaii.

The title is recorded in Bibliographie de la France ou journal général de l’imprimerie et de la librairie (January, 1839), but no pagination is given. A single copy is located in OCLC (Bibliothèque nationale de France), but again, no pagination is given.
