Duplicate carbon notebook, octavo (215 x 140 mm), quarter red leather over marbled papered boards, inner front board with owner’s inscription ‘Fred. E. Down, “Wombalano”, Neave Street, Upper Hawthorn, Victoria’, 100 numbered pages, the first 75 pages comprising the diarist’s duplicated manuscript written in a neat, legible hand, with daily entries covering the 5-week period 15 July – 19 August 1915, describing in detail an expedition by boat from Melbourne to the west coast of Tasmania by a party of mining engineers carrying out survey work – apparently for a gold prospecting company – on the lower Gordon River and at Settlement Island (Sarah Island) in Macquarie Harbour; with several sketch maps and plans; the manuscript is complete and very well preserved.
