Ledger book, octavo (195 x 130 mm), original limp roan, gilt; marbled endpapers, first blank inscribed by the owner ‘Private a/c / George Mander Jones / Collins St. Annandale / 1887’; approx. [70] leaves with ms. entries recording accounts of investments with various entities including David Jones Co. (Sydney), Queensland Brewery (Brisbane), West Wallsend Coal Co. Limited (Newcastle), and Biggenden Mining Co. (Maryborough, Queensland), plus records of personal expenditure and notes on the owner’s stamp collection (Jones was evidently a keen philatelist); entries range in date from 1887-1891 (with one set dating much later, to 1905); complete, and well preserved throughout.

Queensland-born George Burnett Mander Jones (1860-1924) belonged to one of the most famous of all Australian commercial dynasties: his paternal grandfather was Sydney merchant David Jones (1793-1873), the founder of David Jones Limited. Not only that, but he married into another business empire with a household name: his father-in-law was William Arnott, the biscuit manufacturer.

This ledger book was commenced in 1887, at which time George was already practising as a medical doctor in Sydney. Aside from one set of entries dated 1905, the ledger book dates to the period prior his marriage to Margaret Fleming (née Arnott) in Waratah, New South Wales in 1895. The couple’s first child, Phyllis Mander Jones (1896-1984) would go on to a distinguished career as librarian and archivist, serving as Mitchell Librarian 1946-1957.
