Map of the Broken Hill Silver Mines, New South Wales

$4,500.00 AUD

Sydney : Published by E. R. Morris, map lithographer & licensed draftsman, circa 1891. Lithographed map, printed in colour, dissected and laid on linen, in original gilt-lettered cloth folder; a fine example.

A stunning large scale map of the mines of Broken Hill, tentatively dated by the State Library of New South Wales to 1891.

In September 1883 the first block on ‘the Broken Hill’ was pegged by boundary rider Charles Rasp, who had discovered silver – although it was at first mistaken to be tin. Two years later, the Broken Hill Proprietary Company (BHP) was founded, and the site of this famous company’s original mine is located at the centre of this map.

Rare. A single copy recorded in institutional collections (SLNSW).
