Mrs. Wilson dressed in riding habit. Wellington, New Zealand, early 1860s.
Albumen print photograph with hand colouring, carte de visite format, 103 x 63 mm (mount); verso with imprint of ‘E.S. Richards, Photographer, Wellington, N.Z.’, and contemporary inscription in ink ‘Mrs Wilson, New Zealand’; the albumen print has a surface scratch in the sky area at upper right and a few pinholes at top margin, but is otherwise in good condition; the mount is clean.
A striking studio portrait by early Wellington photographer, E.S. Richards, who was active in that city from 1862. The superb painted backdrop is probably a view of Wellington Harbour, with native cabbage trees on the right.
