The stories in this anthology were originally collected by the Indigenous writer and inventor David Unaipon, during a field trip in 1924-25. He compiled them into a manuscript for a proposed book, Legendary Tales of the Australian Aborigines, which was rejected by publishers. The stories were published in the present version by Smith, an anthropologist who had subtly edited Unaipon’s manuscript and claimed authorship. In 2001 Unaipon’s Legendary Tales of the Australian Aborigines was published in its original form.
