Oblong folio (230 x 355 mm), original green cloth over boards, rivet bound, [4] leaves with text (rectos only), followed by [9] leaves each with a mounted gelatin silver print photograph and printed caption (rectos only); as well as images documenting the unveiling ceremony itself, the photographs include two of the volcano in eruption, one taken by Government Vulcanologist G. A. Taylor and the other by geologist Dr. N. H. Fisher; compliments slip of the Minister for Territories bound in; an exceptionally fine example.

‘Mount Lamington, in the Northern District of Papua, erupted in a major volcanic explosion on the morning of Sunday, 21st January, 1951, causing great loss of life and property in an area up to eight miles from the crater. Thirty-five Europeans and 2.907 Papuans lost their lives, and a further 6,000 Papuans, many of them wounded, were driven from their villages.’ (page 1)
