Manuscript in black ink on section of notepaper, 88 x 115 mm; four bars of music notation from Act 2 of the composer’s acclaimed opera Manru, written in the composer’s own hand, and with his full signature beneath, I. J. Paderewski, along with the date 17/X 1904; vertical band of toning towards the right-hand edge, otherwise very well preserved.

This autograph musical quotation was obtained by a concert-goer during Paderewski’s 1904 Australian tour. It is dated 17 October 1904: Paderewski gave his first recital in Adelaide at the Town Hall that very evening. His performance, which was attended by the Governor of South Australia, was rapturously received, and the great pianist was called upon to give several encores. This was the typical audience reaction wherever he played.

In the early 1900s Paderewski characteristically embellished his autographs with this four-bar quotation from Manru.

Provenance: Autograph album compiled by Jane Emma Murphy (Balcombe) (1854–1924), “The Briars,” Mornington, Victoria (Australia); à Beckett family, Melbourne (by descent).
