Within the Law was a play written by American playwright Bayard Veiller. It was adapted for the screen no fewer than five times between 1916 and 1939. In 1916 the very first film version was made by the Australian production company J. C. Williamson Ltd, which had also been responsible for the first Australian stage production in May 1913 at Melbourne’s Theatre Royal. This was to be the same venue used by director Monte Luke in shooting his 1916 film.
