[The Hebrew title translates to New Land]. Palestine : “Sifriat Poalim”, Workers’ Book-Guild (Hashomer Hatzair), 1947. First (and only?) edition in Hebrew. Octavo (170 x 125 mm), publisher’s cloth-backed limp morocco with gilt device to front, in pictorial dust jacket (rear panel water stained); pp. 262; text in Hebrew (title-page in Hebrew and English); printed on cheap paper, edges tanned, otherwise internally in very good condition.

Rare Hebrew edition of Lawson’s Selected Stories, published in Palestine by the Hashomer Hatzair, a secular Zionist youth movement. An anonymous reviewer in The Westralian Judean (Perth), 1 January 1950, opined: ‘They have something in common, the man of the new Jewish State and the man of the Australia of which Henry Lawson wrote. Lawson belonged to a time when the country was in the making. He expressed pain, struggle and triumph, and because of that the “Australian classic,” as he is called in the translation, can catch the imagination of the young people of Israel, who came to drain the swamps, and build from a barren soil, who through sweat, pain and struggle could see the birth of a new nation.’
