The Sydney studio of B.C. Boake is known to have taken carte de visite portrait photographs of members of the Challenger expedition during its visit in 1874, and numerous other naval portraits from this studio are held in Australian collections. Boake may have had a maritime connection, as he seems to have been able to attract distinguished naval clientele to his establishment. Between 1867 and 1877 Boake's studio was located at 330 George Street, just south of Hunter Street – a relatively short distance from Farm Cove. The subject of this prestigious portrait is wearing the gold epaulettes of a naval commodore, and is possibly one on the commanders of the Royal Navy's Australia Station between 1866 and 1877, perhaps either Rowley Lambert (May 1867 – April 1870) or Frederick Stirling (April 1870 – May 1873).
