HERBERT, Christopher B.
Photographic portrait of a young woman, Stawell, Victoria, early 1870s.
Albumen print photograph with hand colouring, carte de visite format, 105 x 62 mm (mount), verso with imprint of ‘C.B. Herbert, Photographer, Patrick Street, Stawell’; the print has a few light marks and pale foxing.
An early example of a carte de visite portrait taken in Christopher Herbert’s studio in Stawell, in the Wimmera region of western Victoria. Davies & Stanbury (Mechanical Eye) do not list Herbert as being active there until the 1880s. The colourist – perhaps Herbert himself – highlighted the young lady’s lips and cheeks, earrings and wedding band, and of course the bow on her taffeta dress.
