Group of 21 gelatin silver photographs, most in format 80 x 100 mm (some 135 x 85 mm), mounted recto and verso of 3 album leaves removed from a disbound album; the album owner’s handwritren captions to pages, identifying a number of the people in the photographs (we know the compiler of the album was a woman, as she identifies herself in several of them as “Self”, and that her husband’s first name was Guy; other names include Pat Dickson and M. Hingston); one of the pages has a sequence titled ‘The Bukit Itam Men’s Pic-Nic’, and one of the captions is dated 1914; the pages are embellished with the compiler’s charming vignette illustrations in gouache of Malayan scenes; all of the photographs and pages are in good condition.

A fascinating private visual record of life on a rubber estate in Bristish Malaya prior to World War One.
