A scarce Communist era poster for an exhibition of works by emerging German artists staged in East Berlin, at a time when there was still some mobility – albeit limited – between the western and eastern zones of the city (it was not until the following year that the Berlin Wall was constructed). The term “Laienkunst” roughly translates as “amateur art” or “people’s art”. Although it eventually became replaced by the term “Volkskunst”, “Laienkunst” applied to a specific movement in time and place organised (and subtly directed by) the authoritarian East German regime.
This is a large framed work and may attract additional shipping costs.
