Johann Christian Schöttgen (1687-1751) was a German theologian and historian, best known for his Horae Ebraicae et Talmudicae in universum Novum Testamentum (Dresden, 1733), which uses Talmudic insights for commentary on the New Testament, after the model of John Lightfoot. The present work on Messianic theology is in a similar vein, Schöttgen drawing on the Hebrew scriptures to form and demonstrate his arguments. It is preceded by an essay on the history of Jewish orthodoxy.
