# 41123

PERCEVAL, John (1923 - 2000)

Self portrait circa 1946

Charcoal on paper, 215 x 230 mm (image), 250 x 310 mm (sheet), small stain lower left (not affecting the image), unsigned, a drawing in blue crayon of a pot by Perceval’s father-in-law Merric Boyd verso.

A rare early self portrait by John Perceval at the age of twenty-three.

At the age of eighteen John Perceval enlisted in the army where he befriended Arthur Boyd in 1941. After leaving the army, Perceval moved into the Boyd family home in Murrumbeena, marrying Boyd’s younger sister Mary Boyd in 1944. This intense self-portrait shows a youthful Perceval at the beginnings of his adult career.

Provenance: John Perceval, by descent to Celia Perceval, daughter of Mary Boyd and John Perceval.
