LITTLE, Marsh (words and music)

[SHEET MUSIC] Boys of the Dardanelles : song.

Cover: Dedicated to the men who answered the call. The Australian public is thrilled through and through by the deeds of the Australians at the Dardanelles. A landing fight unprecedented in the History of War, carried out with a courage, initiative and dash which have left the world amazed … “Sydney Sun”. Sydney : W.J. Deane and Son, [1915]. Folio, original wrappers, 4 pp of music notation (arrangement for voice and piano); some toning and mild edge wear, internally very clean; a good copy.

Published in a number of editions by different Australian publishers within weeks of the landings at Gallipoli, this patriotic sheet music is typical of the unabashed jingoism that helped forge the Anzac legend. Only with the perspective of time did the public come to realise the enormity and senselessness of the sacrifice made by the diggers, sent to the slaughter by incompetent and uncaring British officers in one of the greatest catastrophes in British military history.
