Marcus Clarke’s epic novel of a Van Diemen’s Land convict, For the Term of His Natural Life (1874) was made into a silent film with the same title in 1927. The film was co-written, produced and directed by Norman Dawn. It was the most expensive Australian silent film ever made, and remains the most famous.
