Albumen print photograph, cabinet card format, 163 x 105 mm (mount); inscribed by the sitter in the image ‘T. F. Waller. With Kindest regards. 4/7/93’; recto and verso of mount with imprint of the Charlemont Studio, Royal Arcade, Sydney (and Elizabeth Street, Melbourne); the print and mount have some very light marks, but are overall in good condition.
The following brief obituary for Thomas Francis Waller (1844-1918) appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald on 19 January 1918:
‘DEATH OF MR. T. F. WALLER. ONE OF FIRST HARBOUR TRUST COMMISSIONERS.
Mr. Thomas Francis Waller died at his residence, Royalist-road, Mosman, on Thursday last. Deceased, who was a son of the late Mr. John Francis Waller, of Dublin, came to Australia many years ago. He was Government land valuer in New South Wales for a number of years, and was also one of the first Sydney Harbour Trust commissioners. He held the position of commissioner for seven years.’
Waller had married Swiss-born Jane Caroline Cuénod-Churchill, daughter of Aimé Timothée Cuénod and Susan Harriett Elizabeth Churchill, in Melbourne in 1874. Jane died in Sydney in 1898, and in 1906 Waller married Phoebe Aphrasia Raymond at St. Mark’s Darling Point, Sydney.
