PHILP, J. A.

Songs of the Australian fascisti

$220.00 AUD

[Brisbane] : Edwards, Dunlop & Co., [1923?]. Octavo, lettered wrapper (lightly sunned), lower wrapper with advertisement for Perkins Carbine Stout, inner upper wrapper with advertisement for Teachers’ Highland Cream, pp. 24, a very good copy.

Philps was a contributor, as well as sub-editor. to The Bulletin during the First World War, and this collection of verse is a compilation of published works in reference to the Red Flag Riots of Brisbane in 1919. Philps verse taps into the anti-labour sentiments found following the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the return of ex-servicemen from abroad, who associated the prevalence of electoral fraud with corruption in Labour politicians. Philps in his Foreword does not call for the introduction of Fascism in Australia, but warns that it will be a natural reaction if the systemic flaws and corruption in the labour movement are not addressed.
